Create Your Culture...
My dream business would be a bridal store that sells wedding gowns, particularly blush and pink-toned dresses, because a portion of the profit will be donated to breast cancer research. My corporate culture would emphasize the following traits:
Employees will be hired based on their product knowledge, but more importantly based on whether they seem to be a goal-oriented team player, with customer service experience. The employees must share the same values as the company; they must demonstrate that they can work well with others to achieve goals as a team, and they must demonstrate that they are not only driven to make money. Customer service skills would also be an important requirement to ensure that the culture will be upheld. I would also ask potential employees about previous jobs because if they only have negative things to say, then they would likely be an antagonistic employee.
Employees will be trained in a lot of group exercises, to ensure that they can work well together and co-operate. Training will also focus heavily on customer service. The employees will be trained on proper business ethics, and since the culture emphasizes the importance of the fact that the money is going to a good cause, they will be informed about the donation process as well, which should encourage employees to make ethical decisions and minimize the chance of employee conspiracy related issues such as theft.
In order to ensure that a co-operative environment is maintained, employees will meet regularly with managers, giving them the opportunity to discuss any concerns or ask questions (similar to a mentor relationship). Additionally, employees and managers must attend another training session each year to remind them of the expectations and values. Lastly, employees will also receive updates and be involved in the donations to motivate them and remind them that the business they're doing has a purpose.
- Transparency - people would want to know how much money is being donated and that it is actually being donated, so transparency would be very important.
- Co-operation/teamwork - any new business must have employees who are willing to work together as a team to achieve the company's goals.
- People-focused - employees must strive to provide the best customer service, and satisfying the employees and people that will benefit from the donations should be the top priority.
